9 Environments

As we live, grow and learn our inner self creates a 'cloud' of ideas, concepts and beliefs. Many of these are passed to us through parents, teachers, friends and peers or through our experience of the world.

So how can we change our personal memetic environment? How can we ensure that we are truly aligned to who we want to be and change the memes that no longer serve us?

On this page we'll look at how you can create a personal meme through incremental, sustainable change in 9 key environments.

Willpower Doesn't Work

In his book Willpower Doesn't Work, Benjamin Hardy looks at the reasons it can be so hard to make sustainable changes using just ourselves and our willpower.

In reality, you are a product of your environment and those environments are either inspiring us or expiring us; your environments are either pulling you forward or pulling you back.

But most importantly, you can DESIGN, CHANGE, INFLUENCE or even LEAVE an environment.

9 Environments

Jim Bunch is the man behind The 9 Environments of You. Here's Jim's explanation of what each environment includes and where to focus when making a change.

  1. BODY - overall health, primary energy source, nutrition and exercise.
  2. SELF - strengths, talents, gifts, skills, core values and unique assets.
  3. SPIRITUAL - connection to a higher power (or disconnection), a sense of flow.
  4. NATURE - life, plants, animals, outdoors, geography, seasons.
  5. PHYSICAL - home, office, desk, car, equipment and possessions including anchors to the past.
  6. FINANCIAL - money, investments, insurance, real estate, people who support your financial wellbeing.
  7. NETWORK - customers, internet, social networks, clubs, groups, associations.
  8. RELATIONSHIPS - family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, staff, team, mentors, coaches, pets and people.
  9. MEMETIC - your memes, ideas, concepts and beliefs.

3 Key Questions

To start your development journey Jim recommends making small, incremental changes in each environment. But before you do there are 3 key questions to ask.
  1. Why is this in my environment?
  2. What prompted my choice about inviting this into my environment?
  3. Is this serving me in winning my ultimate goal (health, wealth or happiness)?

Getting Started

So how should you begin? Remember, you can DESIGN, CHANGE, INFLUENCE or LEAVE and environment.
  • The easiest place to start is in the PHYSICAL environment; small changes can make a big difference.
  • Clear clutter, improve a workspace, throw out or sell unwanted possessions by using the 3 questions.
  • Start small, it's easier to make incremental small changes than adopt a 'big bang' approach.
  • Find an accountability buddy or group and share your successes; they'll help to sustain your effort.
  • Move between the environments making small changes in each in turn.
  • Take your time and enjoy the process - you'll get a real buzz from every change you make.
  • Watch how your Memetic environment reflects the changes you make.
  • Achieve your goals for your health, your wealth and your happiness.
